Volendam's most authentic pub
It all begins in 1960. Pietje Mooijer saw it all: he turned his house - in the most beautiful spot in the world on the Volendam harbour - into a snack bar. His daughter Marie and son-in-law Evert were at the helm. Soon their business grew into the meeting place of the village. Here you not only eat well, but also enjoy cosy drinks late into the night.
From the very beginning, this place has attracted a steady club of regulars, some of them sitting faithfully at their regular spot every week since the 1960s. They are now part of the interior.
In 1970, after ten successful years, Marie and Evert decided to turn their snack bar into a real brown café: Bar de Molen was born. This made them pioneers on Volendam's famous Dijk, although many other cafés soon followed their example. Thus, this unique piece of harbour became increasingly lively and gained national and international fame.
Small, cosy and always fun
When Evert "van de Molen" suffered health problems in 1975, Klaas Dekker (from the famous Veerman 'Dekker' family of musicians) took over the business. Twelve years later, it was Kees Sier's turn, who had been working there for years. Under his leadership, De Molen gets a major update. He built an attractive conservatory at the front with a fully opening façade. Ideal for experiencing the beautiful view over the IJsselmeer even better. Not much else changes. Fortunately.
Today, Bar de Molen is still a small, cosy and authentic brown café. A place where everyone is welcome: young and old, student and construction worker, fisherman and businessman. And of course tourists, who fully enjoy the harbour and the bustling life around it from the cosy terrace.
New energy, familiar atmosphere
In 2012, Kees and Bep confidently hand over the business to neighbour Danny (of restaurant De Dijk). With their arrival, the café regains fresh energy, without saying goodbye to the old familiar conviviality. They regularly organise live performances with local musicians, wine and beer tastings, the now famous High Beer and High Wine, pub quizzes and all kinds of atmospheric theme nights.
De Molen also specialised in special beers. The pub is now known throughout Waterland for its impressive beer menu and De Molen even has its own brewery: Bierbrouwerij Volendam.
